When are you short stacked?

Generally speaking, you could be in the short-stack area if you have anything less than 40 big blinds in front of you in a no limit Hold’em online poker game.

In general, I would not recommend that you enter into cash games with anything less than the full buy-in, as it is more profitable to have a full stack in front of you if you know that you are a winning online poker player.

However, in online poker tournaments there is not a lot that you can do about being short stacked, so you’re going to have to get used to it. Just remember that even when you are short stacked, you still have every chance to fight your way back into the online poker game, so don’t give up.

Player C decides to fold, Player D limps in for $200, Player A calls for $100 more and Player B checks his option. There is a total of $600 in the pot and 3 players are going to see a flop. After seeing the flop Player A and Player B both decide to check their hands. Player C thinks for a moment and decides to put in a minimum bet of $200. Now, this is where most players will need to use the knowledge of pot odds. There is a total of $800 in the pot, $600 from pre-flop and the $200 from Player C and now Player A needs to decide if to make the call or not. What are the pot odds offering him? As we said above, pot odds are the money in the pot in comparison to what it takes to win the pot. So in this case, the pot odds look like this:

· $800 in the pot to $200 to call

To make things easier, it is much better to simplify the odds. So this would actually be simplified to 4 to 1. After calculating the pot odds, Player A decides to make the call. Now there is $1,000 in the pot and it is Player B’s turn to call. What are his odds?

And again, this is better simplified which would equal 5 to 1.

Pot Odds – How They Work

Hopefully by now it is pretty easy to understand how pot odds work. But now that that is out of the way, there are some key points to keep in mind about pot odds.

If there is money in the pot and a player needs to call a bet to see the next card, be it pre-flop, flop, turn, or on the river, there are pot odds to calculate. Players who prefer to participate in Full Ring games (games with 9 or 10 players) will receive the least amount of rakeback, for the simple reason that the rake is being divided between more players.
For instance, if you prefer 10-handed tables, and play in games where the pot is raked about $1 on average, your MGR would be roughly $.10/hand ($1 in rake / 10 players = $.10 MGR). So if you are playing with a 30% rakeback deal you would receive approximately $.03/hand in rakeback.

6-Max Rakeback – Shorthanded No Limit Hold’em Rakeback:

Poker players who prefer short-handed games (5 or 6-handed) will make more from their No Limit Hold’em rakeback deal than a player who competes at full ring tables; even if the average pot is raked the same amount!

So, even if the circumstances are exactly the same as in my full ring example; instead of $.03/hand, someone who plays 6-handed games will receive $.05/hand ($1 in rake / 6 players = $.05 MGR). That works out to a $.02/hand increase just for playing short-handed tables! Even a casual player –who puts in maybe 500 hands per day, 5 days a week—would stand to gain $2,600 per year by switching from full ring to 6-max tables. Not to mention that with fewer players you will play more hands per hour, which equals even more money from your rakeback deal!

Heads-Up Rakeback:

If short-handed games offer a good boost to your rakeback totals than heads-up tables are a goldmine for No Limit Hold’em rakeback players! With just two players sharing the rake, a heads-up player will quintuple what a full ring player earns in No Limit Hold’em rakeback –not to mention that heads-up players will see about three times the hands in the same timeframe as a full ring player.

From a 30% No Limit Hold’em rakeback deal, at a table with an average rake of $1, full ring players will make about $.03/hand; 6-max players will make about $.05/hand; and heads-up players will make an astounding $.15/hand ( $1 in rake / 2 players = $.50 MGR).

From a No Limit Hold’em rakeback perspective, heads-up tables are definitely the way to go.
